Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

A.) New Volunteers to Scouting

If you are new to Scouting, follow these steps:



  1. Go to www.myscouts.ca to register as a volunteer (you may use your child's account or you can use a different email address than the one used to register your child – it is your personal preference)
  2. - Click on the volunteer tab at the top right corner and type in your postal code
  3. - Select the age group you wish to work with
  4. - Scroll down below the map to find the 88th Hamilton Group
  5. - Complete the questionnaire fully

Important: Character References

You will be asked to provide 5 character references during registration.

  • You must provide these references during registration - the system cannot add them later
  • BackCheck company will contact 3 of your references by email
  • Contact your references beforehand so they expect the request
  • Relatives are not permitted as references
  • If you've volunteered for another youth organization, include a reference from them
  • You'll need each reference's full name, email, relationship, and duration known
  • At least 2 references must have known you for 5+ years

Returning Members

If you've been a youth or adult member in the past 10 years:



  1. Go to www.myscouts.ca
  2. Log in with your email and password
  3. If your email has changed, follow the "new to Scouting" steps above
  4. Click the blue Volunteer button on the left and follow instructions

Important: Character References

You will need to provide 5 character references during the process.

  • You must include the Group Commissioner or a Section Scouter from your previous Scouting group
  • At least 2 references must have known you for 5+ years
  • All other reference requirements apply as above

B.) Requirements to Complete Within 90 Days

Note: Until these items are completed, you may attend meetings as a helper (not as a Scouter), cannot wear the uniform, and cannot have a Scouting name.

  1. Self-register online as a volunteer at myscouts.ca
  2. Provide 5 character references during registration (see details above)
  3. Police Vulnerable Sector Check (for those 18+)
    1. Can take up to 30 days to process through Hamilton Police Services
    2. Options: In-person at Central Police Station (155 King William St, Hamilton) or online
    3. Cost: $25 + fees
    4. Register as a volunteer for vulnerable sectors (no letter of introduction required in Hamilton)
    5. Forward the police department email with receipt to Group Commissioner for reimbursement
    6. Submit your police check to Scouts Canada using: this form
  4. Agree to the Scouting Code of Conduct annually (may pop up on your MyScouts page)
  5. Personal interview with the Group Commissioner and another Scouter
  6. Complete required training through the David Huestis Learning Centre on your MyScouts page:
    1. Scouting Fundamentals - 6 online modules including Respect in Sport
    2. Respect in Sport - requires a personal course code arranged by the Group Commissioner

    Woodbadge Part 1 training must be completed within one year of registration.

C.) Uniform Information

  • Volunteers purchase their first uniform personally
  • If a second uniform is needed due to design changes, wear, or damage, it will be paid for by the group
  • Order a size larger than normal - check the measurement guide on The Scout Shop website
  • You'll need a red uniform shirt; red polo or t-shirt optional for hot days/water activities
  • The 88th will provide your necker, woggle, and crests
